Support Letter for NYSDOCCS Correction Lieutenants

February 22, 2025

To The Dedicated Union Members of Local 2951,

ince Monday, February 17, 2025, we have witnessed a powerful response from employees within
NYSDOCCS, as strikes have emerged across New York State. Their collective frustration stems
from chronic understaffing, relentless and excessive mandatory overtime, legislation that has
eroded authority within the correctional system, and an alarming rise in assaults against staff by
incarcerated individuals.

To be absolutely clear, neither Council 82 nor Local 2951 has sanctioned or endorsed any work
stoppage. Participation in such actions violates the Taylor Law, which strictly prohibits strikes by
public employees. Engaging in these activities could result in severe consequences, including loss
of pay, disciplinary action, demotion, or even termination.

While we fully recognize the deep frustration driving these protests, we want to take this moment to
acknowledge and commend the unwavering dedication of our Correction Lieutenants. You continue
to shoulder an immense burden, ensuring the safety and security of our facilities during this critical
time. Your resilience and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. Your commitment not only highlights the
urgency of these issues but also strengthens our collective fight for the dignity, respect, and fair
working conditions you deserve.

Please know that Council 82 remains steadfast in its efforts to address these serious challenges.
We are actively advocating for meaningful change through every available legal, legislative, and
collective bargaining channel to improve your working conditions and restore a sustainable work-life
balance for all members of our bargaining unit.

Your safety, well-being, and professional integrity remain our highest priorities. We stand with you,
we fight for you, and we will not waver in our pursuit of meaningful change within the framework of
the Taylor Law. On behalf of the Council 82 Executive Board and Staff, stay safe and God bless.

In Solidarity,
New York State Law Enforcement Officers Union, Council 82 Executive Committee
